The Portuguese head of state issued a message to mark the European Independent Living Day and called for “more and better employment opportunities, as well as physical and technological accessibility” for people with disabilities.

The coordinator of the Observatory on Disability and Human Rights, Paula Campos Pinto, said in statements to TSF that Portugal still “has a long way to go” and an “obligation” to comply with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

According to Paula Campos Pinto, what is lacking is “a change in attitudes and perspectives in society toward people with disabilities” and a “new outlook that recognizes the skills people bring to society.”
