Over a billion people are estimated to live with some form of disability. This corresponds to about 15% of the world's population. Within the population over 18 years, it affects 12% of men, and 19.2% of women (around one woman in five).

To challenge discrimination experienced by women and girls with disabilities, UN Women has launched a strategy to support States parties, civil society, NGOs, among other, to guide the implementation of the most important documents, such as: Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the Sustainable Development Agenda 2030.
