The Employment Equality Directive and supporting people with psychosocial disabilities in the workplace

Capa do Relatório Capa do Relatório

The European network of legal experts in gender equality and non-discrimination has published, in December 2016, a thematic report by Mark Bell and Lisa Waddington entitled “The Employment Equality Directive and supporting people with psychosocial disabilities in the workplace: a legal analysis of the situation in the EU Member States”.

This report assesses legislation from all European Union countries concerning the right to employment and non-discrimination of people with psychosocial disabilities (e.g. anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder).

The report (1) highlights the role played by anti-discrimination legislation on the participation of people with psychosocial disabilities in the labour market; (2) raises awareness to the different terminologies used in regards to psychosocial disabilities at European level and their implications, stressing the need to clarify the terms used in legal and political documents (e.g. “mental disability”); (3) draws attention to the role of stigma in creating disadvantages for people with psychosocial disabilities, namely in the labour market, calling upon governments and business initiatives to combat stigma associated with psychosocial disabilities; (4) Calls for concerted action by government and business in order to build a climate where workers have the confidence to disclose any needs related to a psychosocial disability, and therefore have access to reasonable accommodations.
