20-10-2018 | Portugal "needs a strategy for the inclusion of persons with disabilities"

"There are huge costs for the state when the option is institutionalization," says the coordinator of the  Disability and Human Rights Observatory.

Paula Pinto, the coordinator of the Disability and Human Rights Observatory defended Saturday that "the country needs a strategy for the inclusion of people with disabilities in society, as an alternative to institutionalization, often the only available response."

"Research at the international level has shown that there are enormous costs to the state when it comes to institutionalization, and that returning people to communities and creating conditions for them to participate, to be included and to be full citizens, ends up being much larger return to the state, "said Paula Pinto, who spoke to Lusa during the international seminar on Inclusion and Human Rights, organized by the Inovar Autismo association in Pinhal Novo, municipality of Palmela.
