The book Equal Rights, Equal Voices: The CRPD and the Pursuit of Legal Capacity for Persons with Intellectual and Psychosocial Disabilities has just been published, both in print and in an online Open Access version.

The book is an output of the project EQUAL: Equal Opportunities and the Right to Self-Determination of People with Intellectual and Psychosocial Disabilities in Portugal, promoted by the Observatory on Disability and Human Rights (ODDH) between January 2022 and December 2023, in collaboration with several institutional partners.

The project’s main goal was to identify opportunities and challenges related to the implementation of the new Supported Adult Regime (more information about the project at: https://equal.iscsp.ulisboa.pt/).

The book offers a critical perspective on the limitations and constraints involved in translating Article 12 of the Convention into domestic legislation in different parts of the world, as well as a detailed analysis of Law No. 49/2018, which established the Supported Adult Regime in Portugal.

Based on six case studies drawn from the life stories of people with intellectual or psychosocial disabilities, the book discusses the tensions that emerge between human rights norms and principles and contemporary judicial and social practices concerning the exercise of the right to legal capacity.
